A small-molecule mitochondrial protonophore/uncoupler -- NOT a peptide. It dissipates the mitochondrial proton gradient to increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation; in mice it reduces fat mass and improves insulin sensitivity without reducing food intake or raising body temperature.

Mitochondrial uncouplers as a class carry serious safety concerns (the historic uncoupler DNP caused fatal hyperthermia); although BAM15 showed a wider safety margin than older uncouplers in animals, human safety is entirely unestablished.
