A glycoprotein (the 344-amino-acid isoform of follistatin) that binds and neutralizes myostatin (GDF-8) and activin A -- TGF-beta-superfamily negative regulators of muscle mass -- thereby de-repressing skeletal muscle growth. Myostatin/GDF-8 itself is the target; inhibiting it promotes hypertrophy.
Not well established for the injected protein in humans; pharmacokinetic data are limited. It is a protein/glycoprotein. Gene-therapy approaches express it endogenously rather than dosing the protein directly.
Not FDA-approved. Sold as a research chemical / for laboratory use only. Myostatin-pathway inhibitors broadly fall under substances prohibited by WADA.
