Mechanism

Purified preparation of FSH and LH activity (extracted from postmenopausal urine). FSH stimulates follicular/spermatogenic development and LH activity supports steroidogenesis and ovulation.

Half-life

FSH component terminal half-life roughly 30-40 hours. Commonly reported use/dosing: FDA-approved for ovulation induction/controlled ovarian stimulation in assisted reproduction, and for spermatogenesis induction in men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Reported as daily IM/SC injection during stimulation cycles under fertility-specialist supervision.

Regulatory status

FDA-approved prescription gonadotropin (e.g., Menopur; historically Repronex/Pergonal). Prescription-only and used in monitored fertility settings.

Safety

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, multiple gestation, thromboembolic events, abdominal/pelvic discomfort, injection-site reactions; requires monitoring (ultrasound, estradiol).

Evidence

Mature, long-established for approved fertility indications.
