Mechanism

A 10-amino-acid fragment of kisspeptin that binds the KISS1R (GPR54) receptor on hypothalamic GnRH neurons, stimulating GnRH release and thereby downstream LH/FSH secretion; it acts upstream of the pituitary in the HPG axis.

Half-life

Short; kisspeptin-10 has a rapid plasma clearance (on the order of a few minutes), in contrast to longer-acting kisspeptin-54.

Regulatory status

Not FDA-approved. Investigational, used in research studies (reproductive endocrinology, fertility, sexual response); sold otherwise as a research chemical.

Safety

Generally well tolerated in controlled research settings; long-term and outpatient safety data are limited. Effects on the reproductive axis warrant caution.
